Ruya Akyol runs a design studio based in Milan where she provides extensive consultancy services, creating designs that align with the identity and goals of brands. In her furniture and product designs, she merges Scandinavian functionality and minimalism with Italian elegance.
Inspiration: Akyol mentions that “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho changed her perspective on life, and she enjoys reading other works by the author. Currently, she is reading “Down and Out in Paris and London” by George Orwell, which she says offers a unique view of poverty and order in two of her favorite cities.
Favorite Cities: Although London had been her favorite city for years, after living in Paris, she added it to her list as well. She admires both cities for having strong characters but also for offering diverse styles. If she could choose places to return to for a vacation, she would pick Southern California or Rio de Janeiro, citing the time zone difference allowing her to disconnect from everyday life.
Design Influence: Akyol frequently visits the Triennale di Milano, a museum known for showcasing historical and contemporary design projects. She also visits the ADI Design Museum in Milan, where prestigious design awards are displayed. She is a follower of Patricia Urquiola, a renowned designer whose projects like the Room Mate Giulia Hotel and Elle Decor Grand Hotel influenced her early design philosophy.
Favorite Design: Akyol’s favorite piece of design is the Arco lamp, created by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for Flos. She has great admiration for the lamp after seeing one of its early versions at the designer’s studio in Milan and learning about its design process.
Personal Style: In her home, she has a special place for Lierna chairs, also designed by Castiglioni. She appreciates their Italian aesthetic, comfort, and compactness. She finds them timeless, considering they still feel contemporary today.
